Profile Peter Barnes has been actively involved in the Construction Industry for over 30 years and has a wide experience of many types of work, including building (both new build and refurbishment), civil engineering, and mechanical and electrical installations. During Peter's career he has been personally involved with site engineering and site management, programming and planning, quantity surveying, contracts management and general management. A significant part of Peter's construction experience has related to quantity surveying having started as a quantity surveyor and having progressed through to being the Chief Quantity Surveyor for a London based building contractor. However, in addition to this, Peter also became the General Manager of the construction arm of the same company. His experience therefore encompasses virtually all aspects of both the quantity surveying and management functions for a building contractor. Peter has been involved on a number of occasions in the analysis and resolution of complex commercial, contractual and management problems on major construction projects including the management of others and negotiations with others as part of that process. Peter has also acted as an Expert Witness in respect of both Liability and Quantum issues, and has been appointed to act as an Adjudicator on nine occasions and as a Mediator on two occasions. Peter obtained the highest marks in the UK for the year that he passed the King’s College / Chartered Institute of Arbitrators’ Arbitration Award Writing Examinations. Peter is the Vice Chairman and Treasurer of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators' East Anglia Branch, the Vice Chairman of the East Anglia Branch Committee of the Institute of Civil Engineering, and is on the Eastern Branch Committee of the Chartered Institute of Building. Peter is a member of the Adjudication Society, the Arbitration Club (Law Courts Branch), the AICA , the RICS Contracts Panel and the SLV-ConEx. Peter is the author of the book titled ‘JCT’05 Standard Building Sub-Contract’ published by Blackwell Publishing and is the co-author of a follow up book published by Blackwell Publishing titled "Sub-contracting under the JCT 2005 Forms). He has written published articles for the ICES Construction Law Review and the NEC Users’ Group Newsletter, and has written a chapter for the RICS's ISurv on-line publication. Contact details.
